Apparently, these days you can’t just be a good old fashioned heating and air conditioning technician.
My boss recently told me that I’m going to have to start doing some selling when I’m out in the field. I told him that I’m not an HVAC salesperson at all! I’m just a plain old heating and cooling technician. I like working on furnaces and fixing things like thermostats and air conditioners that are on the blink. I don’t know the first thing about being a salesman, but he seems to be pretty adamant about the whole thing. He says that in this day and age, everyone in the HVAC company is going to have to work together to keep our sales up. He said that while HVAC maintenance and repair work is our bread and butter, selling new furnace systems and air conditioning systems is like our main course. I don’t know what he’s even talking about with the food analogies, honestly. He makes no sense to me most of the time. I just want to come in, get my list of furnace and A/C maintenance calls, do my job, and go home. All this talk about selling higher end HVAC systems and things like whole home air purifiers and radiant heated flooring just sounds crazy to me. I think that if people really want something like that then they will ask you about it. You shouldn’t have to pressure people into buying something, in my opinion! But I guess I’ll see what I can do – I really don’t want to start looking for a new job at another HVAC business in town.
